Listen, cooking is fun. I love the creativity it offers me. There is something so satisfying about taking a handful of ingredients and transforming them into a meal. It’s like taking a bunch of words and stringing them together into a story—say this one, for instance.

But even I, someone who loves cooking, get tired of doing it. Sometimes the recipe I excitedly bookmarked on Sunday is the last thing I want to make on Wednesday. (I’m human!) And try as I might, I can’t quite shake the guilt that I’m “giving up” by preparing a frozen meal.

This is where my favorite affordable grocery store, Aldi, enters the narrative. Aldi knows that life is unpredictable, and a delicious and satisfying freezer meal that doesn’t taste like it was ever frozen is the solution. Instead of feeling guilty or defeated, I feel like I’ve been immediately transported to a delightfully cozy English pub.

What is the Aldi frozen meal that makes me feel like I have my life together?

It brings a tear of joy to my eye when this is back in stock: Fremont Fish Market British-Style Fish and Chips. There are two versions, one is haddock and the other is cod. They are both excellent, and you should immediately drive to Aldi and buy them.

You might be surprised to hear that this is the meal that makes me feel like I have my life together, but let me explain. This frozen meal helps me remember that anything is possible! I can’t say that about most foods, and yet this Aldi frozen dinner comes together in about half an hour and costs $5.49.

I know that frozen fish and fries are no grand invention. But this product is not like a regular frozen meal; it’s a cool frozen meal. Here’s why:

  1. The fish is beer-battered, which gives it an incredibly light and flaky coating. It’s more elevated than your typical frozen breaded fish, and tastes much better.
  2. The batter actually gets crispy in the oven. The directions instruct you to cook the fish on a wire baking rack above a baking sheet, so air can circulate. The result? Crispy fish that isn’t getting soggy from baking in a pile of its own grease.
  3. The ratio of fish to chips is perfect. It’s a great serving size and feels exactly like a portion you’d get while dining out.

Basically, just add a side of mushy peas and a pint of English beer, and you’ll feel like you’re in an English pub. Or, if you’re like me, you can pretend that you moved to London and your Mr. Darcy-lookalike boyfriend ordered takeaway from the local chippy because he knew you were having a bad day. When was the last time a frozen meal inspired you to dream?

How long will they be available?

Like any great Aldi find, “here today, gone tomorrow” is always the mentality. The fish and chips should be back in stores beginning on May 7, and only the masterminds at Aldi HQ know how long they will be in stock. If you happen to frequent my Aldi store, then good luck getting one before I buy them all. Now I’m off to find a good chest freezer!
